A woman in New York City is said to have turned herself into the police after reportedly throwing her hot coffee and cell phone at a man in a hate crime. Police say 48-year-old Hadasa Bozakkaravani is accused of making anti-Islamic comments to the victim at Edmonds Playground in Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill before attacking him.

Police say that Bozakkaravani is being charged with nine crimes, including four hate crime charges. There has been a big rise in hate crimes in New York City since the unrest in the Middle East started in early November.

These crimes include more strikes against Muslims. Tensions are still high because of the war between Israel and Hamas. A report from the NYPD Hate Crime Task Force says that the total number of cases, including the most recent one involving Bozakkaravani, rose by 124% in the past month.

The number of anti-Semitic incidents in New York City has also gone up by 214% since October 2022, according to the study. Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban said in the report, “The men and women of the NYPD continue to work hand in hand with the people we serve throughout the five boroughs.” The safety of the public is everyone’s job, and each neighborhood needs to do its part. “That is how we will sustain low levels of crime and further reduce violence and disorder across our great city.”
