The Santa Barbara County Fire Department says that a woman was killed in a two-car accident on Highway 101 south of Buellton on Sunday afternoon.

At about 1:10 p.m., firefighters and other emergency workers were sent to the scene of the crash in the northbound lanes of Highway 101, just north of the Nojoqui Summit, according to fire captain Scott Safechuck.

He said there were two cars in the accident, and one of them ended up 300 feet off the side of the highway. Safechuck said that the female driver, who was the only person in the car, was pronounced dead at the spot and that her body had to be pulled out of the wreckage.

The woman’s name was kept secret until her family was notified. Safechuck, the woman who was driving the other car, which stayed on the highway, was not hurt. No one said what her name was.

The California Highway Patrol shut down the right-hand highway lane for a long time after the crash while they looked into it.
